Bitcoin basics · Lesson 1 of 3
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is digital money that works without a bank. It was launched in 2009 by a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto.
Instead of one company keeping the records, thousands of computers around the world keep the same copy of every transaction. This shared record is called the blockchain.
Only 21 million bitcoin will ever exist. That fixed supply is a big reason people compare it to digital gold.
Key points
- Digital money, no bank in the middle
- Records kept by a worldwide network
- Supply capped at 21 million
Education only, not financial advice. Crypto is risky — only use money you can afford to lose, and check it’s legal where you live.
